About the Department
Since the academic year of 2009/2010, the Department of Music, the Juraj Dobrila University in Pula, has been intensively engaged in preparing new study programmes of Solo Singing to expand its scope. The pilot project, that was prior to the establishment of this department in Pula, included the prep years (2009/2010 and 2010/2011). The head teacher of the Solo Singing course was the famous soprano Lidija Horvat-Dunjko, and her assistant was mezzo-soprano Sofija Cingula. Apart from the above-mentioned course and the Basics of Vocal Technique course for the students of Music Education (also an optional course for classical accordion students), a selection of optional courses at both departments was widened by the following ‘singing’ courses: Vocal Technique Exercises, Solo Singing, and Vocal-Technical Aspects of Children’s Songs and Vocal Examples in Teaching. All these newly-introduced courses led to huge interest and belong to the most attended optional courses in general. Vocal-instrumental compositions and ensembles are now added within the Chamber Music course.
Since the very beginning of the prep years (organized for the study of Solo Singing), students have considerably contributed to concert programmes prepared by the Academy of Music, and had big success at national and international competitions. Singing as a segment of smaller or larger ensembles became unavoidable at concert and guest performances organized by the Department, while solo singing students are among the most active and successful promoters of the Academy of Music today.
Based on the official letter by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport, the study programme of Solo Singing was entered into the Register of Study Programmes, which confirms that, according to Article 12, Subsection 2 of the Regulations, needed requirements were met and this study programme can be delivered.
In the academic year of 2013/2014, the entrance examination for this study was organized for the first time. Three eminent artists - Dunja Vejzović, Lidija Horvat-Dunjko and Sofija Cingula - were the members of the commission and decided who would be the first solo singing students in the history of the Academy of Music in Pula.
The academic year of 2014/2015 is the first year in which students at this department will be able to study Solo Singing, and acquire competences, knowledge and skills required for developing the career of a vocal artist.
The undergraduate study programme of Solo Singing is in line with strategic goals of the Juraj Dobrila University in Pula; its quality with regard to teaching and artistic activities also contributes to the development of our academic community, as well as to the cooperation with other cultural institutions, tourist boards, cultural-artistic societies, etc. Organizing solo singing seminars and master classes, and establishing cooperation between our students and ensembles/orchestras from Croatia and abroad, this study further contributes to the role that the University should have at the local and national level, as well as at the global international level. Much attention will be paid to cooperation with other cultural institutions in the country because we want to strengthen the cultural development in the region.
The ECTS system enables the students both horizontal and vertical mobility – national and international exchange. The horizontal mobility means that they can choose any similar study in Croatia or abroad to go there, while the vertical mobility implies the ability of enrolment into any related/similar graduate study in Croatia or abroad.
